Cards Building Another Win Streak

18 May 2023 by Tim OBrien

After running up a six-game string of victories that included five wins by ten points or more, the Middleton Cardinals lost to the top-ranked Hudson Raiders at the Badger Spring Invite tournament in Wisconsin Dells on Saturday, May 6. Down 11-2 at the half, the Cards battled back in the third and fourth quarters but struggled with missed shots and couldn’t contain the relentless Hudson offense.

In the three games since, Middleton has built another a winning streak, highlighted by an overtime victory against Kettle Moraine on Friday, May 12. The hard-fought match up included five changes in the lead and was tied at 9 goals each at the end of regular play.

The Cardinals scored first, with a goal from Troy Teff. The Lasers quickly evened things up. Middleton took the lead again as James Grosspietsch scored and then, once again, Kettle Moraine answered with a goal of their own. Grosspietsch and Teff each scored again in the first quarter, giving Middleton a 4-3 lead. The second quarter included a third goal from Grosspietsch, who would earn player of the game honors for his efforts, and one from team scoring leader Arjay Johnson. The Lasers kept pace, making the score 6-6 at the end of the first half.

The back and forth continued through the second half, with additional goals from Grosspietsch, Teff and Johnson, as well as one from Parker Leslie, leading to a 9-9 tie and four-minute sudden death overtime period. With less than a minute left, Teff scored again – his fourth on the night – to secure the Cardinal victory.

A 15-2 romp at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee followed the nail-biter at Kettle Moraine, buoying the team’s spirits in the leadup to tonight’s home match-up against the Madison Regents.
