Win Streak at Six

2 May by Tim OBrien

Their overall record at 8-3, the Cardinal boys lacrosse team are looking to extend their current six game winning streak into the last seven games of the regular season. With only two home games remaining, and match-ups against perpetual rivals Verona and Oregon still to come, the team has the week off from competitive play this week before facing Verona on Monday, May 6.

The team’s string of victories began with an April 13 road trip and a resounding 23-3 victory over Notre Dame Academy of Green Bay. After back-to-back wins the following weekend, over Mukwonago on April 19 and Appleton on April 20, the Cardinals played four games last week.

On Tuesday evening, the team traveled to Sun Prairie. Running up an early lead against Sun Prairie United, Middleton led 8-0 at the close of the first quarter. Ultimately, nine different players scored for the Cardinals for a resounding 18-5 victory.

Back home on Thursday, the Cardinals took on Sauk Prairie in front of an enthusiastic Youth Night crowd. Junior co-captain Troy Teff led in scoring with three goals for the night, followed by fellow starters Gabe Passini and Arjay Johnson with two each. Seniors Parker Leslie and Ryan Molander had one goal apiece. Perhaps most excitingly for the youth players in the stands, five underclassmen also put points on the board, including two from freshman standout Jake Blindt.

Saturday, the team headed to the Wisconsin Dells for the annual Badger Invitational tournament. Winning their opening game against the Bay Port Pirates 15-5, the Cardinals were led by senior Will O’Brien, whose performance at faceoff prevented Bay Port from achieving even a single minute of offensive possession in the first quarter. Middleton’s powerhouse offense included five goals from junior Arjay Johnson, three each from captains Parker Leslie and James Grosspietsch, two from sophomore Patrick Passini, and one apiece from senior Gabe Passini and sophomore Roan Johnson. Sophomore Jonathan Schwartz also turned in a strong performance with some key plays at long-stick midfielder.

In their second game of the day, against the Kimberly Papermakers, the Cardinals again showcased their offensive depth, with four goals from sophomore standout Roan Johnson, hat tricks from Arjay Johnson and James Grosspietsch, two goals from Gabe Passini, as well as one each from four other players, and shots on goal from five more. The Cardinals defeated the Papermakers 16-3.
